Tiefland

Leni Riefenstahl

2015

The most controversial film version of Lowlands by German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl

Yes, just as it sounds: Tiefland means Lowlands, an adaptation by the German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl of the opera by Eugen d’Albert with German Libretto by Rudolf Lothar. The director herself plays Marta. The well-known play by Guimerà had already been adapted previously by American cinema (Marta of the Lowlands, by the prolific J. Searle Dawley, in 1914) and also by the French Opera (La Catalane, by Ferdinand Le Borne, in 1907) and even by German cinema itself (Tiefland, by Adolf Edgard Licho, in 1922), but the version by Riefenstahl is the most controversial.
