Poster 2004, Toni Catany
He arrived in Barcelona in the 60s to study Chemistry at the University of Barcelona, but soon dropped out to become a self-taught photographer. A founding member of the Grup Alabern with Joan Fontcuberta and Manuel Esclusa, he constantly experiments with different kinds of techniques, from the most traditional (like the calotype of the 19th century) to the most modern (the use of polaroids), but all dealt with in a highly personal way, achieving compositions that are extremely personal, full of harmony, elegant and intimist.
Since his first exhibition in 1972, his pictures have travelled the world, and he has been awarded numerous prizes, including, for example, the French Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1991, or the Premi Nacional d’Arts Plàstiques of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Premio Nacional de Fotografía of the Spanish Ministerio de Cultura in 2001.
His work takes in nudes and portraits, still-life photos and landscapes of countries all over the world. For the Temporada Alta poster, he has used one of the images from the series dedicated to views of the city of Venice.
