Cinema Truffaut: 25 yearts after Huston

Every monday evening from 5th of November to the 17th of December

For another year, film plays a part in the programme for performing arts with Cinema Truffaut. This year, the festival aims to join the Filmoteca series with Temporada Alta, to air some of the classic movies of one of the great western directors: John Huston (Nevada, Missouri, 1906 – Middletown, Rhode Island, 1987). Huston was a key figure in the history of cinema, an innovative director who produced filmic gems such as The Maltese Falcon, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, The Night of the Iguana, Under the Volcano, The African Queen.

Huston knew what he wanted from his actors. He also knew how to tell a story and direct actors, whom he tended to strike up close friendships with. Huston, much like the genius Orson Welles, lived life to the full, which meant that his lack of funding spurred him to make films in order to ‘survive’. Despite this, when circumstances prevailed, he was able to ‘script’ a film in order to go on hunting trips in Africa. Clint Eastwood explains it well in his tribute film “White hunter, black heart”.

Huston, ultimately, delivered a brilliant portrayal of New Year’s night in Ireland with his final film Dubliners, an authentic text-based film with sensational acting. For this reason, and to mark the 25^th anniversary of his death, this year Cinema Trauffaut pays tribute to the great John Huston.
