The Black Heritage Choir invites audiences on a journey through the history of African-American gospel music, from its origins to the present day
The Black Heritage Choir, made up of a selection of singers from the Mississippi Mass Choir under the direction of Mr. Jerry Calvin Smith, presents The Soul of Gospel. The concert traces the evolution of African-American gospel, from its origins in the fields to contemporary urban forms. Conceived as a choir of soloists, the group combines collective strength with leading individual voices. A journey through a genre shaped by jazz, blues, country and hip-hop, and rooted in figures such as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and James Brown.
