Past and present meet in Christiane Jatahy’s new production
In 2011, the acclaimed Brazilian playwright and director Christiane Jatahy premiered Julia in Brazil, a show that would become one of her most iconic productions and that was seen at Temporada Alta in 2013. It was a very free version of Miss Julie, by August Strindberg. Now, the director takes on the challenge of updating the proposal and relocating it to present-day Catalonia. The new creation dialogues with the actors from the original Brazilian version, Júlia Bernat and Rodrigo de Ode, creating new forms of interaction between cinema and the stage.
Past and present come together to highlight the contemporary relevance of a work that addresses intolerance, prejudice and misogyny, which unfortunately continue to cut across centuries and continents.
This proposal follows a formula that the festival has successfully used on numerous occasions: inviting a foreign director to direct a Catalan technical and artistic team. Examples include titles such as Ai! La misèria ens farà feliços and Història d’un senglar (o alguna cosa de Ricard), by Gabriel Calderón, L’oncle Vània, with Oskaras Koršunovas, Davant la jubilació, with Krystian Lupa, L’omissió de la família Coleman, by Claudio Tolcachir, and La neta del senyor Linh, with Guy Cassiers.
