El tiempo todo entero

Romina Paula transforms a tragedy into a reflection on freedom, time, and memory
Romina Paula transforms a tragedy into a reflection on freedom, time, and memory
El tiempo todo entero, by Romina Paula, is an emblematic production of contemporary Argentine theatre. First performed more than 15 years ago, it is now considered a classic and was awarded the Florencio Sánchez Prize for the best Argentine play. In 2011 it was staged at Temporada Alta, and now returns to Catalonia to shake up the Teatre Lliure with its free take on Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, inspired by elements from the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
In this re-reading, Antonia – the sister – becomes the narrator and central figure. Memory, time and perception are confused in a room illuminated by a constant, almost unreal white light. The mother is no longer authoritarian, but an independent woman; the daughter, fully conscious, chooses not to act: ‘I’d rather not’. In an apparently free world, the characters remain imprisoned. And time – huge, dense, immutable – becomes the stage and the protagonist of this impressive piece.
