After La mort de Lluís XIV, the most unclassifiable of Catalan directors returns to the Festival. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2019
70-odd years before the French Revolution, a group of libertines expelled from the straight-laced court of Louis XVI are keen to meet the legendary Duke of Walchen, a seducer and free-thinker from Germany. They seek to export licentiousness and find a place where they can continue their naughty games. Will the novices of a nearby convent let themselves be carried away by this dark night, in which the only law that reigns is that of insatiable desire? After La mort de Lluís XIV, the most unclassifiable of Catalan directors, Albert Serra tears down the barriers of cinema once again. The film was awarded the Jury’s special prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2019.
