Sol Picó

Sol Picó (Alcoy, 1967) is a dancer and choreographer considered one of the most personal and unorthodox voices in contemporary dance in Spain. Her artistic identity stems from a hybrid training: she graduated in Spanish and Classical Dance at the Òscar Esplà Conservatory in Alicante (1985) and completed her apprenticeship with stays in Barcelona (La Fàbrica Espai de Dansa), Paris (La Ménagerie de Verre) and New York (Movement Research), a journey that explains her ease in crossing techniques and languages.

After her first professional steps linked to the Alcoy scene and years of work as a performer and creator with various companies and artists, in 1993 she founded the Sol Picó Company in Barcelona, which became her stable platform for production and touring. Since then, she has built up an extensive repertoire and a continuous presence in theatres and festivals, with a profile that the Enciclopèdia de les Arts Escèniques de l’Institut del Teatre describes as international.

Her style combines physical virtuosity and theatricality, bringing together contemporary dance, Spanish dance, flamenco and even pointe work in unexpected contexts, often with humour, irony and a critical view of society. This perspective—particularly attentive to the female universe and gender stereotypes—permeates many pieces in their catalogue. Among their most emblematic titles are Bésame el cactus, Paella mixta, La dona manca o Barbisuperestar, Memòries d’una puça, Sirena a la planxa and the solo One-hit wonders, which revisits key moments in their career.

In the field of collaborative creations, WW (We Women) (2015) stands out as a choral project on contemporary women, built from diverse perspectives and disciplines. In terms of recognition, she has won a dozen Max Awards and other notable awards, and in 2016 she received the Spanish National Dance Award in the category of creation and choreography.
