Ai! La misèria ens farà feliços

A reflection full of humor on the usefulness of art in a hypothetical future.
A reflection full of humor on the usefulness of art in a hypothetical future.
After the success of Història d’un senglar (o alguna cosa de Ricard), Gabriel Calderón presents a new creation where his characters reflect on the usefulness of art, the power of performance, identity, and the meaning of work in a context where humanity seems to be losing relevance. Echoing Life is a Dream and The Great Theatre of the World by Calderón de la Barca, the Uruguayan playwright uses this bleak scenario to question the essence of human existence in the age of automation. What remains of humankind when its very existence is replaced by robotic perfection?
With a humorous and sarcastic tone, the piece—starring Pere Arquillué, Daniela Brown, Joan Carreras, and Laura Conejero—becomes a political and social satire that invites the audience to reflect on the future of humanity, its relationship with technology, and the role of art in an increasingly dehumanized society. In a world where human presence seems to have become unnecessary, the actors—who no longer perform—find themselves trapped in a hall of mirrors where the very nature of acting is put into question.
